Message from NW NGNA President, Sharon McRae, MSN, APRN-BC

Announcing the charter of the Northwest Chapter of the National Gerontological Nursing Association

Spring is in the air.  For those living in northern latitudes, flyers and circulars of garden supplies and pallets of flowers in front of supermarkets herald the arrival of Spring.  Closer to home we examine dormant garden beds for signs of tulips and daffodils planted in Fall. As an amateur gardener I know the benefit of planning, preparing soil and sowing seeds at the right time.   Like the unofficial rules of gardening, the NW NGNA planning committee began with a goal of becoming a chartered chapter of the National Gerontological Nursing Association (NGNA).  In the Fall of 2011 and throughout 2012 the committee met to discuss and create a strategic plan.  We successfully wrote the chapter By-Laws and obtained Washington State licensure by July of 2012.  I am pleased to report that on March 28, 2013 the Northwest NGNA officially became a chartered chapter!

I want to thank the NW NGNA board members for their outstanding work and tireless enthusiasm helping our chapter take root.  I am fortunate to work with enthusiastic and dedicated individuals.   As we take time to celebrate this milestone, I extend the garden analogy; we are sowing seeds for our next goal: to increase membership and participation in NW NGNA.

Members of NW NGNA are truly committed to NGNA’s overarching mission- “To improve the quality of nursing care provided to older adults”.  We are also committed to establishing a strong network of health providers.  This goal will be met through educational offerings, professional/ social events, and networking.

Additionally, we are a dynamic chapter and seek members interested in active participation.  Committee involvement provides an excellent opportunity to share creative ideas and demonstrate untapped talents. We look forward to collaborating with nurses and health organizations with like mission.

So today, at the beginning of our chapter, we want to connect with you! Who are your community partners? Who shares your commitment to improve the quality of health for older adults?  How can we work together to reach our mutual goals? I encourage you to extend an invitation to colleagues to join NW NGNA on this journey.

With appreciation,

Sharon G. McRae
